The utterance is the way of phrasing the command by the user so that the device gets activated.

Some of the request phrases are simple and easy to understand, like “Play music on Spotify”, but voice UX designers need to consider the other ways of phrasing that might occur like a user could say “I want to listen to music…” or “Can you play…” instead of “Play…”.

The more variations the designer considers, the better the AI ​​will understand the requirements and respond with the appropriate action.


A slot is a required or optional variable required by the user to operate.  For instance, if a user’s voice command is for calming music, the variable here is calming. This slot is optional as the AI ​​can fulfill the request without any variables. But, for example, if the user wants to make a reservation for a restaurant, the slot needs information.
